Our active and experienced livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) here on our farm occasionally give us a litter together. See below to learn more about them, and to see their current available puppies!
The Mama - "Alaska"
Alaska is 1/2 Anatolian Shepherd, 1/2 Great Pyrenees. She is our trusted livestock/property guardian, and takes her job very seriously. She is affectionate and gentle with those she loves (including little children), and wary of anyone she doesn't know - which is what you want in a guardian of any sort! Alaska is so tender with young animals, and even raised an orphaned lamb once. Alaska weighs 90 lbs. |
The Sire - "Luis" Luis is our FCI registered Spanish Mastiff male. He was imported from Spain to the U.S. Luis is also an active livestock guardian here on our farm, and has the heart for the task. Luis is very calm, submissive, and lovable. He's quiet, unless he senses that there is something out there that needs to hear the bark of a huge dog who is serious about protecting his flock! Luis weighs 150 lbs. |
Alaska's and Luis' past pups...
...are turning out to have amazing, all-around versatile temperaments. Some are now livestock guardians like their parents, others are indoor family pets, and one is even a personal security dog. They have been described as being highly alert, jealous of their family, funny, tall, and are huge, but still growing! We're so pleased with how this combination of special breeds is turning out!
They're perfect.

Some recent updates on the above pups...
Bombur looks a lot like his dad & mom. He has a lot of Pyrenees in him. Love the tail because it’s exactly like an Anatolian! Perfect curl. He’s gotten big very fast. All he wants is lots of attention & to run around in the yard. Loves to chew on things. Luckily no furniture but toys & if anything left around he will find." Amanda H. in GA Samson is a very big boy! He is super sweet too! He stands at 30 inches right now at 8 months so I’m not sure if he will grow much more. He loves to walk, play, chew sticks and dig which my husband hates but we really love him!!" -Simmons family |
I wish she would keep the geese off my porch . She'll just sit there and let them eat dog food out of her bowl. Yeah, she's pretty nice to the other animals. Although she does herd the ducks and cats around a little too much. I think her guarding instincts are great, and we haven't lost anything to foxes this year. |
We renamed her Daisy Bell. She has a really sweet and funny personality. She loves to give everyone kisses first thing in the morning and she has to inspect everything and everyone who comes onto the property. She seems to know where I’m going to go next when I’m taking care of the animals in the morning, and she meets me at my next station. We have not had a single loss to predators since we brought her home. She has a great eye for hawks. She loves children and baby animals. She is a bit of a shoe thief but she’s also still in that chewing stage so we just make sure she has other things to chew on and it is fine. We love all the sounds she makes - she’s very expressive. And she absolutely loves being outside when it is cold. That is her special thing. That and making zoomies in the snow!"
Millie has a great temperment and has become a beloved member of our farm. She is an attention hog and uses her hefty size to push her way in between anyone else getting "her" attention. She is very sweet and gentle, though, and loves every member of the family! She does great with children, but is unaware of her size, so needs to be supervised with little ones who could easily be knocked over with just a wag of her tail. She also loves our other dog, Ella, and is a bit codependent! She always wants to be with someone! She is a smart dog with a lot of potential. She quickly learned basic commands like sit, down, and shake. She is a big girl! (I have to be honest, I wish I had done more leash training with her when she was smaller, because now she can drag me if she wants to!) She is super strong! She does pretty well overall, though, and really just wants to be with her people or animal friends. I don't see her roaming off on her own, like some other LGDs tend to do.
She is due for a weight check, but I'd guess she is over 100 lbs at least, and not yet a year old. Our vet really liked her temperment when she had her last check up.
Millie is still in her puppy stage and needs some training, especially with smaller animals like chickens, but she is a great watch dog and bonded well when kept with our buckling.
(When we got our Maremma, Ella, at 18 months, we were told she had gaurded chickens previously...well, we were quite surprised when we brought her home and she chased our chickens and killed one or two! It wasn't until we raised a flock with her (in a protected pen) that she saw them as "HER chickens" and gaurded them. There was a similar dynamic when we had bottle goat kids that bonded with her...the bond lasted even when the goats grew into adults. Though LGDs do have the instinct to gaurd, they still need training, especially as energetic puppies. It may take some time and patience, but a well trained LGD is an invaluable asset to any farm.)
Millie is very alert to any threat and watches throughout the day and night with our Maremma, Ella, barking when necessary. When I have her on the leash, she is very alert if a stranger approaches and definitely has the guarding instinct, but seems to also be able to discern when I let her know that something is not a threat, and can then relax.
Overall, Millie is a wonderful dog, very affectionate, smart and protective. We look forward to watching her reach her full potential as she continues to develop. We are thankful to the Moore family for raising such a fine puppy!
